Hey 👋🏼 welcome to this week’s newsletter!
Hope you’re doing great!
If you’re new here, you can read past issues here.
When I joined Facebook years back it was connecting with old school friends.
Then watching funny cat videos.
From there to poking people & chatting with strangers.
But social media has evolved much more than that. My last 2 jobs & countless other opportunities have been from social media- LinkedIn & Twitter in particular.
In today's digital age, social media has become more than just a platform for staying connected with friends and sharing your baby’s pictures.
It has become a powerful tool for professionals to:
network,
showcase their expertise,
and advance their careers.
Whether you're a recent graduate entering the job market or a seasoned professional looking to make a career change, harnessing the potential of social media can significantly enhance your professional growth and opportunities.
Building Your Brand
Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world and what sets you apart from others in your field.
Social media provides a platform to curate and amplify your personal brand, allowing you to showcase your skills, knowledge, and unique perspective.
Start by optimizing your social media profiles to reflect your professional identity, including a professional photo, a concise yet compelling bio, and links to your website or portfolio.
Don’t just post drunk party pictures on social media!
Consistency is key when it comes to building your personal brand on social media.
Regularly share content related to your industry or area of expertise, whether it's articles, insights, or thought leadership pieces.
Engage with other professionals in your field by commenting on their posts, participating in discussions, and sharing relevant content.
By positioning yourself as a knowledgeable and active member of your industry community, you can attract the attention of recruiters, potential employers, and industry peers.
Network and Build Relationships
Social media offers unprecedented networking and relationship-building opportunities, enabling you to connect with professionals worldwide and expand your professional network.
LinkedIn & Twitter are particularly valuable for building professional connections.
Sorry if you think Twitter is just for banter & savage responses.
Leverage Social Media for Job Search
Social media can be a powerful tool for job seekers.
On LinkedIn, follow companies you're interested in working for, engage with their content, and leverage your network to uncover hidden job opportunities.
Utilize LinkedIn's job search feature to explore job listings, research companies, and connect with hiring managers and recruiters.
On Twitter, follow founders, recruiters, & people who work for companies you want to work for.
Bringing it together…
Whether they admit it or not, recruiters are judging you based on your social media posts
Don’t just use social media to watch funny videos
LinkedIn used to be a CV bank. Not anymore! Post regularly, write articles & comment on posts by sharing valuable insights/perspectives
Twitter is not just for banter & savage responses.
Be genuine in your interactions and focus on building meaningful relationships rather than simply collecting connections/followers.
People are making valuable connections on social media.
Don’t just laugh and Retweet things.
Your next job is on social media.
I’d like to hear from you… what topic would you like me to write about next? You can leave a comment or email me directly at nnamdi.azodo@gmail.com or theworkplacehq@gmail.com
